(2) Students
Liming Zhang (Institute of Applied Ecology Chinese Academy of Sciences)
I am a PHD student from Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This year is my second year in my doctoral career. My major is circular economy and industrial ecology. I was born in year 1985 in Hubei Province, China. I like reading and singing. I entered in Hunan Agricultural University when I was 19 years old. My major was engineering management. It took me four years to finish my bachelor degree. During this time, I learnt basic engineering knowledge. After that, I took my master degree in the same university. The major was land resources management. During the period of my studying for master degree, I took part in some research jobs and activities to practice my scientific knowledge. This was very helpful for me. Now I am a PhD student and I am very interested in the field of circular economy and industrial ecology. My PhD research mainly focuses on redevelopment of old industrial area. Old industrial areas have all made outstanding contribution to the economic and urban development for their local region, as time goes, most of them have been facing unsustainable problems including increasing environmental pollutants, ecological degradation, all of these holdback the sustainable development of the economy and affect the society stabilization and eventually the living conditions of the local residents. It is urgent to redevelop the old industrial areas all over the world.
Preeti Aggarwal (TERI University)
I am post-graduate in Environmental Science from India currently pursuing my doctoral research at TERI University, New Delhi. My doctoral research mainly involves forward analysis of urban transport in Delhi and reflecting on its impact on urban air quality and human health. I have been closely associated for almost 4 years with research in the wide arena of environmental and sustainability, thus closely working on the issues of environmental conservation and management, carbon emission accounting and management, sustainable mobility and transport, urbanization and sustainable growth etc. I have been involved in academic teaching for more than 2 years now and also been actively involved in various independent/team consultancy projects and research assignment. At TERI University, apart from pursuing the doctoral research, I am working on various technical and research assignments, involving policy makers, industry experts, stakeholders and community at large. I believe there is a great need to integrate academic research with learning from the community at large. I am passionate about cooking (vegetarian food) and music (instrumental & soft lyrical).
Pooja Arora (TERI University)
Pooja Arora is a Doctoral student at TERI University located in New Delhi in India. She has done her graduation from Delhi University and post graduation from Bundelkhand University in environmental sciences from India that laid the foundation to the deep interest that she developed in various environmental issues later in her career. Prior to joining PhD she has been working in various environmental research projects in National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) New Delhi, specifically on air pollution monitoring and climate change. This research experience helped her to develop a keen interest in air pollution issues prevalent in India. Indoor air pollution is one such burning issue where human health is at stake especially the poverty stricken population which constitutes a large fraction human population in India. Therefore she decided to work on this issue in her PhD and identify the research needs and the possible contribution that she can offer through her knowledge. She is in the 4th year of her PhD and has found this research area highly challenging with a wide scope of work still needed to fill the gaps.
Victor Tumilba (The University of Tokyo)
I am currently a PhD (1) in the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science (GPSS) of the University of Tokyo and earned a Master’s degree from the same academic institution in 2010. The focus of my research is on social-ecological systems and employs resilience theory to provide a unit of measure for system dynamics according to temporal network flows and structure variations. The context of application is on the aquaculture industry of the Philippines as a social-ecological network.
One of my encounters with the concept of sustainable development was under the employment of the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ), an organization that implements sustainability development programs.
My first involvement in project implementation was the Trade Policy and Trade Promotion for the Philippine Milkfish (chanos chanos) industry. One of the main tools used in identifying bottlenecks was the value chain approach which is a simplified supply network. The second project was the Private Sector Promotion Program (PSP) which dealt with improving business climate for small and medium enterprise development in order to promote employment. The main focus of the projects where capacity building programs and participatory planning processes which includes rapid economic assessment, action planning and monitoring and evaluation.
I have also received a bachelor’s of science degree from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences of the University of the Philippines where I first learned about sustainability in terms of fish population dynamics and maximum sustainable yield models for fish stock management. These academic and work related experiences and knowledge are the foundations for the research I am conducting to enhance our understanding of sustainable development in terms of social-ecological system dynamics and resilience.
Ali Kharrazi (The University of Tokyo)
Ali is a second year PhD student at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences at the University of Tokyo. Ali completed his undergraduate studies at the City University of New York in Economics and Mathematics and earned a Master’s degree at the London School of Economics in Information Systems. His research interests include sustainability science, data intensive research, and ecological economics.
Nooshin Torabi (RMIT University)
I am a second-year PhD student in RMIT University, Melbourne. My thesis title is Integrated Ecological and Socio-Economic Modelling of Biodiverse Plantings for Carbon Sequestration. I want to explore the socio-cultural drivers of private landholders who participate in biodiverse carbon planting in their properties. Also, I am interested in finding out additional social and environmental values of carbon plantings which influence landholders’ decision to participate, such as community development, climate change resilience and biodiversity enhancement. I hold a Master’s degree in Environmental Planning and Management, which developed my insight into current environmental issues and I have undertaken a major research project to finish my degree. Also, I have worked as an environmental officer for eight years and conducted Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) projects that needed to integrate social, ecological and economic aspects of the study area. I have conducted interviews with various stakeholders in the field (e.g. Local community, factory owners, government). Furthermore, I worked with Greenfleet between 2009 and 2011 and was in contact with private land holders during this time. This experience stimulated my interest in the social and cultural drivers that influence adoption of biodiverse carbon plantings.
My Research Interests include Integration of Socio-ecological systems, building resilience in rural areas, Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs), exploring the social roots of ecological issues and integration of markets for ecosystem services.

Devon Dublin (Hokkaido University)
As a child I was always inclined towards the environment this led me to become a member of the Boyscouts which allowed me to go into dangerous areas under guidance. I developed a love for poetry as well which saw me writing many of them on the basis of inspiration from these natural settings. After high school I went to veterinary college and became an animal health assistant and the proceeded to the Agrarian University of Havana in Cuba where I graduated suma cum laude as a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics. My thesis research allowed me to learn about trees as well because I studied medicinal plants and their use for treating animals. As a young professional due to my conviction that we must live in harmony with the environment I became involved with youth organizations with a bias for agriculture which allowed me to be an advocate for projects such as mangrove restoration and the protection of endangered species such as the Arapaima gigas. Working with the Ministry of Agriculture which has the presidential mandate to be responsible for issues relating to climate change and forestry conservation, I got the opportunity to play an integral role in the planning and execution of many projects in that regard and to interact with the Natives of our country who still live in the Amazon with their customs generally intact. I decided to come to Japan to do a Masters in Fisheries science and during that time enrolled in the Hokkaido University Inter-department Graduate study in Sustainability (HUIGS) and Special coordinated training program for Sustainability Leaders and Sustainability ‘Meisters’ (STraSS) programs of the Centre for Sustainability Science (CENSUS) and that motivated me to enroll in the Doctor course in Environmental science to contribute meaningfully to a sustainable world.
